Kitchen reno: shaker style or modern custom cabinets?
Planning a mid-range kitchen refresh in Toronto suburbs. Leaning toward shaker doors for a timeless look, but wondering if custom is necessary or if semi-custom lines from places like Home Depot can pull it off. Anyone done shaker-style custom cabinets lately? Thoughts on quality vs cost?

Shaker is super versatile and ages well, especially if you go with solid wood or good MDF. Semi-custom can look decent from a distance, but up close you notice thinner materials and less precise joinery. We went full custom shaker with Alliance Millwork about 18 months ago — chose quarter-sawn oak, upgraded hinges, and they incorporated hidden outlets and custom spice drawers. Process was collaborative; they suggested tweaks that improved flow without extra cost. Finish and durability have been excellent. Pricing was higher than box stores but fair for the level of detail.
